Eurogamer Expo – Leeds

November 6th, 2009 No comments

Just some thoughts on a few of the games we saw at the Eurogamer Expo.

Bayonetta – Not that impressed to be honest.

Dantes Inferno – = God of War 3. I’ll probably pick it up as it will be cheaper than buying a PS3 and a copy of God of War. Looked interesting enough, nothing that different from other games of this type.

Heavy Rain – We stood and watched it for 10 minutes or so in the morning, and at various points during the day I had a glance over at it. The game looks to be one long QTE cutscene with more options available than the standard “Press X now!”. Reminded me of Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy a lot. Cant see myself buying it but will likely rent it to give it a go.

L4D2 – Speaks for itself. Looked good, sounded good. Melee weapons rock!

Assassins Creed 2 – No chance to play it. Everyone playing was either pants or doing nothing of interest so all I saw was more of the same rooftop action from the first one. I’m sure it will be a good game, I enjoyed AC1 a lot, but just couldn’t get a good feel for this from the little we saw.

AvP – Will be getting this. We watched a multiplayer match filled with Predators for a while. No other game modes seemed to be on display. Very impressed with what I saw but I’m a big Predator fan so no surprise. Seemed to draw bigger crowds than most of the games on display.

Avatar – Meh. Looks like another generic over-the-shoulder shooter. Another game that probably was not shown in the best of lights. The players I watched were not doing anything of interest really.

Monster Hunter 3 – The highlight of the show for me obviously. I love Monster Hunter in all shapes and sizes. The area around the MH3 display was criminally empty in the morning. Later in the afternoon when we played for the second time it was a lot busier. The game looks good enough you would be forgiven for not thinking it was running on a Wii. I know I’m biased but it was one of the standout titles at the show for me. Considering there was about 5/6 shooter games that all blended together into one murky, brown shooter.. probably not that hard to stand out.

Lots of interesting titles in the Indie Arcade area which was another highlight of the show for me. Got to play VVVVVV, Fig.8, and something else I cant remember the name of but the graphics had been done in a claymation style which was interesting. We also went to a very informative talk given by Introversion Software, the people behind Darwinia/Multiwinia, and Defcon amongst others.

All in all we had a great day. Just a shame I bought tickets for both days as we managed to see/do everything we wanted to on the first day. Live and learn I guess..
