District 9
Watched District 9 last night.. great movie!
The story deals with racism and xenophobia, and draws obvious influence from the events that took place in South Africa in 1966, when an area in Cape Town (district 6) was declared a ‘whites only’ area by the National Party Government.
What starts out as a light hearted film (thanks mainly to the main character, Wikus’ enthusiasm and cheerfulness whilst serving eviction notices on the ‘Prawns’) soon turns into a struggle for survival as MNU forces attempt to capture Wikus after an alien canister discharges liquid into his face, changing his life drastically.
It has issues but they are minor and the film manages to rise above these with a great pace and some intense action towards the end of the film.
