Darkfall: No Trial – No Sale!

After reading a little about Darkfall I thought I’d check it out and see for myself what this PvP-sandbox game was all about.

Unfortunately, no trial available from the site. No problem, I thought.. it seems to be a small(ish) niche game right now, surely a digital download wont cost much more than £20/£25 with a free month included?

Turns out if I wanted to buy the EU version of the game to play on the EU servers its going to cost me the equivalent of £40+, and about £14 per month subscription fee after the first month is up. A quick look at the NA site tells me the NA version works out to be around £30 after currency conversion, and about £8 per month subscription!

With no physical copy of the game on sale these are the only two options available to me.. and without a trial there is just no way I’m spending that much money without trying it out first.

Why the reluctance to offer even a 7 day trial? Why the high price and variance between regions?

Looking at Amazon.co.uk I could buy (if I didn’t already own), World of Warcraft, Burning Crusade, and Wrath of the Lich King all in for a total of £34.98 shipped to my door. With whatever the subs fee is these days, £8 is it?

I’m not convinced enough that Darkfall has as much content as the Warcraft series. It may play better for PvP fans – In fact, I’m sure it does – but in terms of value for money, Darkfall has some work to do before I part with my money.
